Hi, my name is Umi Wimberly, and I am a multimedia designer based in Denver, Colorado with a deep passion for creating designs that push boundaries and spark conversations. My love for pop culture and ability to keep up with current trends helps fuel my creative designs and adds an edge to my work that you can't find anywhere else. My design philosophy embraces the power of creativity to tell stories, advocate for change, and amplify underrepresented voices.
Ever since I was a kid, I've loved art. From video to drawing, I've always had a passion for creativity which was nurtured by my parents. It only grew in school, where I took classes on video, theatre, art, music, and everything in between. This led me to Colorado State University after graduation, where I majored in Journalism and Media Communication and graduated Cum Laude. This major allowed me to continue my work of honing my abilities in all things creative. Not only did I work in Adobe Creative Suite, utilizing programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and After Effects, but I got to collaborate with others to create social media campaigns, websites, and multimedia projects. My work in various classes led me to a career in graphic design at the Survivor Advocacy and Feminist Education Center and a content coordinator at the Black/African American Cultural Center.
These opportunities allowed me to merge my love for design with my commitment to social justice. In my roles as a graphic designer and content coordinator at these organizations, I used visual storytelling to advocate for positive change and elevate cultural narratives. Each of my projects allowed me to explore new, unconventional perspectives that could inspire a shift in thinking. I used Illustrator, Photoshop, and Canva to create designs that not only made people stop and stare, but made them think as well.
Beyond my work and schooling, I hold a deep love for music, drawing, video games, and all things pop culture. These interests have followed me from childhood into my adult life where I use them to fuel my creative process, inspire innovative ideas, and push me to break creative boundaries. After all, if you want to stand out, you must challenge a few norms and break some rules.
